Knocked Up

Date: 16 November 2007

This comedy by Judd Apatow stars Seth Rogen as a stoner drop-out who impregnates Ketherine Heigl’s ambitious television presenter during a one-night-stand. On the face of it, this is one of those movies where the title would be set in a fat red font to indicate that an IQ less than 100 is required. However, like Apatow’s The 40 Year Old Virgin, there is much more to this film than that. The jokes are sometimes crude, but are usually good and delivered without reference to the audience—i.e. they’re not delivered as punch lines in the way that someone like Will Ferrell or Vince Vaughn might in a movie like this. The film follows the lives of two protagonists and their respective friends and family as they try to make a relationship based upon a one-night-stand and a pregnancy work.

There is a good article in Slate on the film, and Juno might make a nice companion piece.

4 stars.
