English-French/Spanish/German Dictionaries for iPod

Thanks to the efforts of the Internet Dictionary Project, I have made a set of foreign language dictionaries which translate from English to French, German and Spanish for use on the iPod.

Installation instructions:

  1. Download the dictionary archive file.
  2. Attach you iPod to your computer (Mac or PC), and run iTunes if it is not already running, or if it does not start automatically.
  3. Enable iPod disk use (see here for more details).
  4. Locate your iPod on your computer. On the Mac, it will appear on the desktop; on the PC, well, you crazy guys are on your own (check the filesystem in Windows Explorer, I’d guess).
  5. Navigate to the Notes folder.
  6. Unzip the the file downloaded in step 1.
  7. Copy the French, German and Spanish folders into the Notes folder (or whichever ones you want to use).
  8. (Optionally, disable disk use via iTunes.)
  9. On your iPod, choose Extras→Notes from the main menu, then choose the dictionary to use. Each entry in the resulting list can be selected to view the corresponding dictionary entries; the names of the dictionary files specify the first and last English word in that particular file, for ease of navigation.

Problems?

I am aware of a few small problems (e.g. some accents are incorrect), but if you have more problems, then please contact me.
